Question

I have asked this before. But I need to know how to get our billing out on
a patient that hospice admitted and we did not know of admit until the day
of admit. Our home health RN goes out that day and fills out dc oasis.
Medicare will not pay us because pt was on hospice before we discharged pt.

Is there a way around this in billing that we are missing.

Thank you,
Ann Stephen

  • You cannot bill that last visit.

We have a conversation with Hospice and decide date of discharge and date of admission to Hospice. We have an amicable relationship, so it usually goes easily.

  • There isn't a way around it (that I am aware of). Hospice trumps Home Health when it comes to billing. Your discharge date would need to be the last day (skilled visit) seen prior to Hospice admit. Hope that helps!

We would make the day before admit to hospice our discharge date and complete the DC OASIS as of the last skilled visit prior to that date. If there is a HHAide in the case, you can still bill for any visit between the last skilled visit and the dc date as this would have been an unplanned discharge.
